I have two opals that my husband purchased in Australia in 1988. Both are solid cabochons with a high dome. According to a recent appraisal I had done by GIA appraiser, one is .96 carats; the other is 1.65 carats. Both are described as semi-black with "very bright orange-green play of color in a broad flashfire pattern" and "not directional." The larger of the two is "slightly included" while the other has no inclusions.
The appraisals on these stones -- for retail replacement value -- came back much higher than I had expected. We are interested in selling them, but have no idea how to market them or where to go to research how one establishes a realistic asking price. Any help greatly appreciated! Private e-mails OK.
