Yes, they do make man-made opals. The poorer quality ones are made out of plastic, and can be light. Mexican Opal usually is red or orange based. I've never heard of a black based one. Black opals are almost always from Lightning Ridge, Australia, and are very expensive - $100's to $1000's per carat. I would take it to a qualified gemmologist. He could probably tell by examining the opals.
