I hope by now you've identified the opal. If so ignore this message. Opal and quartz can occur in the same deposit. I have an opal mine that has quartz with an opal layer cap. My first opinion is the play of color that you see is from an airgap fracture in the quatrz created by the dynamite or from geologicaly pressures. This is a very common mistake. Do a hardness scratch test and this will quickley tell you what you have. Remember though in a scratch test you do a two way scratch test. Otherwise you can make mistakes on the test results.
