It could be little pieces of opal or an opal simulant with a plastic cap. I've seen that before. Good Triplets usually have a quartz or glass cap, which is heavier than water. A triplet is a very thin layer of precious opal, with a black bottom, usually a black rock (obsidian, black basalt, black jade, etc.), with a clear top, all epoxied together.
I hope you didn't pay too much for it - where the other opals real?
