I sell Ethiopian Opal - there always seems to be a lot of quesitons on the cutting. A stabilization process is being sent to me which I will happily share. People have had success in cutting this opal with NO HEAT. Leather laps produce hot spots. A muslin lap and French cerium has been recommended to me. A lot of cold water. Chocolate opal responds poorly to any type of heat. Really scrutinize the piece you are cutting prior to buying in bright sunlight - fracture lines will show up readily in the sun.
