The first thing to look for is the colour,bright flashy, will the stone face from the top,or look good only from the side, The field that the opal was mined from plays a major part of the price. Many fields have a bad reputation for producing cracky opal. The perfect opal is nearly impossible to find it may have cotton, rust, gingerwisker or be on matrix. all devaluing the stone.
