Well - just last night I watched a show on the Royal Peacock Opal Mine, and other places. This has led me to start planning a trip, and so I've been learning about opals and such.

I came across your post, hoping it would benefit me - then I came across this http://www.gemcutters.org/LDA/StabilizingTurqOpal.htm which might benefit you and me and everyone else?

Fascinating, indeed.
Even if they're known to be unstable - I've read that they're beautiful enough to not take that into consideration, and still considered to be valuable. Perhaps the tendency for them to fracture would only boost the value of those that stay intact? Sounds promising to me, well worth the efforts.

Curious - when they do 'break' or 'fracture' - what happens? Do they crack after they've been worked and polished? Or is this immediately after they've been removed from the ground and washed off?

I'm a member of the www.theringlord.com forum - it's dedicated to maille (chainmail) crafters, if you're interested. - I'm Julie2022.

Take Care,
Julie

Let me know what goes on with your opals - I may never get a chance to dig my own, though I really want to.
