Hi Julie,
If you can come up with a real method of truely stabilizing Virgin Valley opal, you could make some real money! The method that they stated is basically glueing the pieces together with epoxy. It's better than nothing, but the opal is still cracked or crazed. However, VV opal is worth a lot as specimens - as long as you keep it wet.
By all means go up there dig - it's one of the last unspoiled areas in the West. But I'll warn you - digging for opals (or any other gemstones or minerals) is highly addictive.
