As Chair of the Opal Sector of the Australian Jewellers Assoc and an Opal dealear with 30 years experience I am a little concerned at some of the mis information on the Opal site ! 99% of the worlds Black Opal comes from Australia so that kind of gives us the edge down here !. Most reputable sellers of Opal, rough, boulder, black or white, cut, freeform, rubs or cabs are mebers of the J.A.A. or an affiliated assoc and bound by a strict code of ethics. Under our laws it is an offence to label something that it is not....eg solid as opposed to doublet....enhanced as opposed to natural.
What you are terming "dyed" is known as "treated matrix".............i.e cooked in a sugar based solution to darken. This type of Opal weighs 'light' for size and can be spotted at 40 paces by an expert.
No dealer I know would even consider buying rough opal without wetting it down first, in fact, on the field we are known to lick the Opal and I can not recall even one icidence when I have dried Opal off when deciding how much per ounce.

Hope this is of interest.
