Hi, Jim. Another late follow-up, but, yes, I've seen people glue caps onto perfectly good opal to make doublets, on the theory that the opal needed protection. Another possible reason for doing this might be if the stone was too thin to cut into a cabochon or too thin to set in a particular piece of jewelry.
For doublet/triplet unsticking, I recommend "Attack", available at many hardware stores and also lapidary/rock/hobby stores.
