Most doublets, if they have the some brightness, color, size, etc. of a solid opal, is usually priced at 1/10 the cost.
Caveat Emptor is my advise. If I can't see the back of and the side of an opal in a setting, I assume it is colored black or a doublet. Also, beware of "boulder opal doublets" where ironstone is glued to a back of doublet quality opal to look like a natural boulder opal. It has become very common in recent years.
Most jewelers are not very knowledgable about opal and usually buy it from a middleman. I would make sure I went to a reputable jeweler who is also a gemologist. They know the difference. There are a number here in the Southern California area that I trust.
