I have a beautiful ring from my grandmother, but the opal is scratched (I wore it before knowing the properties of opal!). I've seen the instructions for fixing this (fine grade sandpaper and cerium oxide(?)), but am wondering if this is really something I can do, or if it needs to be done by a professional. I would hate to ruin it, but I'm getting fascinated by opals, and would like to begin working with them in my jewelry. Can these repairs be easily made by people not used to doing this?
