i was told NEVER to expose opals to oil and i've never had trouble since. once a month, i take my entire opal collectiona and soak it for a couple of days in distilled water. that seems to keep them shiny and in good colour, unlike the previously recommended finger-rub and rubbing on the cheek thing, which seemed to make them go dull after a while. found instructions on google about resurfacing stones -- apparently it's not hard to do using 700 and 800 grit sandpaper with the edge taken off (rub over glass to dull a bit) and finishing with polishing paste such as tin oxide mixed with water. of course, i can't find the post now that i need it...(sigh)
