Subject: Peruvian Opal beads reacted with silver - why?

I had some peruvian opal beads stored in a NEW baggie with some Thai silver and the silver became what appears to be etched, not oxidized (not a matter of just polishing them back up)...some reaction clearly happened between the silver and the opals...any ideas? Is there any history of radioactivity wih opals??!!
