Never soak opal in any type of oil! Using glass is not the answer either,it will not work unless the lid leaks, no control. Use the smallest and the thickest Ziploc that the opal will go into, place the opal in the ziploc. Put a single drop of distilled water into the bag with the opal and zip it closed with a small amount of free space remaining. Take a second ziploc and put the first ziploc, with the opal, into the second. Make sure both ziplocs are zipped. Store the opal out of the direct sun light and where the temperature is fairly stable. The plastic is slightly porous and will let the opal dry slow enough that it will dry out evenly. The larger the opal, the longer it will take. Small piece one to two years, three inches across and a foot long will take ten to fifteen years. Humidity also plays a roll on how long it will take. If you live on the coast or a body of water forget it.
