Help! I am heartbroken, I have an old, large clam shell opal (approx. 1.5" diam) that I dropped and a fingernail size piece flaked off the top. I believe it needs to be sanded down to blend in the edges where it came off and repolished. Can I do that myself or should I take it to a lapidarist. The only problem is finding someone local who knows what he/she is doing so the rest of the clam shell stays intact. Thank you for all and any advice.
