I have a set of mounted opals that I believe may be very old doublets (they are bezel mounted in 9k setting--I have conflicting opinions on the age of the settings, could be late 19th century up to 1930s or so. A well known opal expert briefly looked at them-initially said-not doublet-but after a brief closer look through a loupe said-probably doublet but not like any he had previously seen-suggested old methods, I believe some tar like substance, might have been used as a bond because the internal structure viewed under strong light from the back through a hig res loupe looked nothing like modern doublets-said only way to be sure was to remove bezel, which could also destroy opal. SO, I suspect what I have is a very old set of doublets. The base color appears more bright medium blue, with strong multi color flashes, they are flat rather than cabachon, and appear opaque except under strong light with magnification they are somewhat translucent. I am not trying to sell them or even obtain a value-just want to know more about them or what they are. I could provide digital pics, but do not have a web site. Does anyone have information on this type of opal stone, or would someone be willing to look at pics to suggest more definitive ID or association with known types? Thanks for any information either through this forum or directed to my email address. Regards, Beth Parker
